The Lavenham Press Bindery has the capacity and capability of turning around all publications speedily and efficiently. Being on the same site as the rest of the company means that there are no unnecessary delays through transport or other associated problems. Saddle stitched magazines and booklets, sewn, perfect and notch bound books and journals up to a 40mm spine are handled by staff who pride themselves on the finished product. Spiral bound and cloth or printed paper case books are also available. As logic would demand, the bindery has the capability of folding anything that the printers can output. This means being able to trim and fold all large format B1 size, enabling 16 pages of A4 or 32 pages of A5 to be trimmed and bound from one sheet.
Perfect Binding: Until fairly recently this was the most common paperback style of binding where pages are milled at the spine and then glued to its cover.
Notch Binding: Very similar to perfect binding except that rather than a simple milling of the pages at the spine, notches are also made and the resultant pages then glued to the spine. Whereas simple perfect bound books are likely to break if they are opened out and flattened, the notches in notch bound books give a stronger, more flexible spine and are much more likely to survive being flattened out.
Saddle Stitched: This style of binding involves a stitch used in sewing together the leaves of a book at the fold lines, either with thread or wire. A typical example of saddle stitched binding is that of most magazines where the wire appears more like a staple.
Limp Sewn: Similar to saddle stitching, limp sewn binding entails the stitch through the fold lines of the page but also has the addition of being glued to give extra strength to the binding.
A recent addition to the binding system at the Lavenham Press is a Presto saddle stitcher (stitch and trim), designed for small to medium run lengths, achieving speeds of up to 9000 cycles per hour. The unit supports a wide variety of book sizes, from 3.9375 x 5.6875 inches up to 12 x 14.375 inches.
At the Lavenham Press we commonly bind journals, magazines, books, annual reports, manuals, brochures, directories and catalogues.
